Headline News Network Has a New Interviewer and A New Show

Comedienne and talk show co-host Joy Behar had a new talk show on HLN.

Headline News Network recently changed its name to HLN. When it started it was a 24-hour news station where viewers could turn on any time day or night and get the news. Recently it has been changing and adding different formats, including the new Joy Behar Show.

Joy Behar, one of the original co-hosts of The View, is adding another talk show to her resume. She is not giving up The View. She is simply adding another show to her life.

Behar Works on The View and The Joy Behar Show

"The View is live every day except for one day,” Behar told a gathering of the Television Critics Association. “We do put one show on tape on The View. And thanks to HLN … we have made it so that I can have the same schedule pretty much. And we'll be doing a taped show in the afternoon so I don't kill myself at 9 p.m. and at 9 in the morning.”

As for whether Joy would like any of her co-hosts from The View will be joining her as her guests on The Joy Behar Show. “Sure. I'm sure we'll have them on as guests here and there. They have great stories, [and] great opinions. We'll have them on. Sure. Absolutely.”

Behar said she enjoys her arguments with Elisabeth Hasselbeck when they lock horns on The View. “And Whoopi, we know, has tremendous opinions about everything and a philosophical way of looking at life that's kind of unique. And, of course, Barbara is a living legend, as she likes to remind us. Well, we remind her, actually. And Sherri Shepherd is coming along and doing great over there. So all of them, I think, would be great.”

Joy Behar Explains Her New Show

When describing her new show, Joy Behar said, “I think it's a show that will have interesting people on. We'd like to do a little bit of alternative kind of bookings. We'll have probably panels, you know, all different kinds. We'll have maybe some bits.”

Behar explained about alternative bookings. “We're thinking, for instance, instead of interviewing Bernie Madoff, let's have his secretary on. Something like that. Think of the news story of the day and we'll think of maybe somebody who is a little bit on the outside of the main story to give some kind of a different point of view on the story that you don't necessarily see on other shows.”

While Behar has specific opinions, she said, “I really would like the show to be a conglomeration of different opinions. I don't want people on who agree with me. There is nothing more boring than that. I like people to disagree with me, to disagree with each other, to have lively discussions, to have spirited debates about all sorts of things. And it's not limited just to politics. I'm interested in everything except sports. And I'm interested in sports if there is some kind of an issue involved rather than batting averages.”

Behar is Looking Forward to Interviewing Sarah Palin

Behar would love to have former Alaskan governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin on her show. “I'm interested in things that she's said and done. And I don't think we ever get the answers out of her.”

Behar said Palin might feel more comfortable talking with her than with some of the other interviewers. “I would like to ask the question, ‘when Katie Couric [asked] you, ‘What do you read?’ why couldn't you come up with an answer? The Moose Gazette. Something.’ The woman couldn't come up with an answer. I have that question in my head. I want to know why [she] couldn't you think of something. No one has asked her that. [Also] ‘why do you think the press is against you in so many different ways? What are you doing? Why are you really leaving Alaska?’ Of course, everybody wants to know that. So I think what she would get is a real conversation from somebody who is generally interested in getting some answers out of her. And if she doesn't want to come, well, then, we'll get her maid or something, or her babysitter.”

Joy Behar is Determined to be a Good Interviewer

Joy Behar is a stand-up comic. She performs all around the country. But she insists that while she is doing her HLN show, she will not be in the role of a performer. “I'm not really approaching [this show] as a performer, to tell you the truth. I'm a stand-up comic. That's when I perform. When I'm sitting and interviewing a person, I'm actually interested in hearing what they have to say. So it's not a performance for me. I think that O'Reilly and Beck and those people, they are performing.”

Behar is sincere in the fact that she is looking for answers from her guests. She is not looking for fights, she is just looking for answers and to get more information about subjects and people.

“I'm approaching it from a point of view of, I'm an American citizen who wants an answer. And I like to do it as nicely as I can. I'm not confrontational, particularly.”

Behar is looking forward to being able to thoroughly examine an issue, which is something she cannot do on The View.

The View is limited in its scope in that we have five women all trying to talk at the same time, and so a subject will come up and [we] have, like, three minutes to discuss it. I really have an interest in a lot of these subjects, and I want to talk some more about them and I want to meet more people to talk to about them, and that's why I wanted to do this job.”

The Joy Behar Show airs at 9 PM ET/PT on HLN. The show premiers September 28, 2009.
